The Top 5 Signs It’s Time to Bid Your Divorce Attorney Farewell

Divorce is an incredibly emotionally difficult time in anyone’s life, and you’re often acting on impulse and a sense of desperation rather than making the same quality of decisions you would under normal circumstances.

For those reasons, people often find themselves in a difficult position—they realize they’ve gone with the wrong divorce attorney.

If you’ve hastily selected a divorce attorney who doesn’t have the right experience, or simply isn’t a good fit for you, the results can be detrimental. Aside from a gut instinct, how do you know you’re working with the wrong attorney and it’s time for a change?

Sign #1: Your Attorney Doesn’t Seem to Ask Many Questions

When you’re going through a divorce, you may at first feel more comfortable with a lawyer who doesn’t ask a lot of questions. After all, it can be challenging to share such personal details of your life with a stranger, and it may be something you’re hesitant to do.

Unfortunately, if your lawyer doesn’t seem interested in knowing even the smallest details of your life, your family, and your finances, then you may have a problem.

If your lawyer isn’t asking questions it may be a sign you need to find someone who’s truly interested and able to represent you.

Sign #2: You Feel More Anxious After a Visit to Your Lawyer Than Before

Let’s be clear—it’s not the job of your divorce attorney to sugarcoat the situation or lie to you just to make you feel better, but at the same time, a visit to his or her office should typically make you feel more at ease about your situation.

Your lawyer should be able to help you plan, know what to expect, lay out how your case will be tackled, and answer any questions you may have.

These are all reasons to feel a bit better after speaking with your lawyer, rather than feeling much worse.

Sign #3: Your Lawyer Seems too Busy For You

If you have trouble getting in touch with your lawyer on a regular basis, and he or she takes an unusual amount of time to respond to your calls or emails, it can be a sign there’s a problem.

Yes, lawyers, like all of us, are busy people, but they’re also there to be on your side during your divorce, and guide you through the process, and it’s not really possible to do that if you’re never able to contact that person.

Sign #4: You’re Uncomfortable Talking to Your Attorney

As mentioned above, it’s important that your lawyer is delving into the details of your life and your relationship, and you may end up discussing some pretty personal matters, so it’s absolutely vital you feel comfortable doing so.

If you feel like you can’t tell your lawyer the truth, or if you feel like your lawyer simply backs you into a corner, steamrolls you, or even bullies you, it may be time to move on to someone else.

Sign #5: Your Lawyer Doesn’t Seem to Know How to Approach Your Situation

Your divorce lawyer should be experienced on the intricacies of your specific case, since no two divorce cases are ever exactly the same.

During your search for a divorce lawyer, make sure you work to learn just how much experience and expertise your attorney has in terms of cases that are somewhat similar to your own.

If your lawyer seems to be at a loss as to how to handle something in your case, take it as a red flag.
